About Us

Every employee at Caldwell Contracting has a passion for what they do, during the peak season, we employ over 30 highly skilled and trained staff.

Caldwell’s Potato Barn started in 1988 growing potatoes locally. Potatoes were stored and packed out from the Potato Barn for sales to supermarkets and fish and chip shops in Southland. Nowadays only Agria potatoes are grown for the chip market.

From small beginnings of one or two tractors to a modern fleet of excavators, tractors, trucks and machinery, the business has grown to provide a full range of agricultural services.  From a farming and potato growing background Caldwell Contracting began in 1994, with Alan and Deidre starting the agricultural contracting business from the same yard as the Potato Barn.  Alan saw the opportunity for cultivation and agricultural work when the dairy industry started to get bigger in Southland.  Soon the agricultural contracting became the main activity with the dairy boom in Southland, nowadays less potatoes are grown.

Alan and Deidre started on their own with a John Deere 2830 Tractor, with a JF90 Silage Chopper on it and a couple of old trucks; a Leyland and a Scania. Alan drove the chopper and Deidre drove the truck.  A few staff were employed to help, their three sons, Bevan, Brent and Douglas, all helped out when they were all old enough to drive machinery.  Along came more tractors, machinery and staff, working long hours.

Caldwell Contracting has grown and diversified substaintially since its humble beginnings.  New machinery and technology has seen Caldwell Contracting expanding and employing over 30 staff during the peak summer months with silage harvesting, baleage, cultivation, effluent management, water carriage, and wood chipping.
